How The Bible Is A Reminder To Have Faith In Ourselves
We all have the opportunity to forge new paths, to recognize our perfection in our imperfections.
“The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. Although this quote is often mis-attributed to Aristotle, this was never a direct quote. Regardless of the origin of the wisdom, its meaning rings true in my life-professionally and personally. Throughout life, humans learn, change, and integrate experience into a cohesive whole self. The journey to wholeness can be difficult, but it is universal. My faith in Christianity reminds me of this daily.
Perhaps nowhere is the story of the human condition so widely told as in the Bible. Despite its many translations throughout the centuries, there are unifying themes of love, faithfulness, and mercy. We are offered in each page the opportunity to see these same things in ourselves.
It can be challenging to see and accept the whole self along the way, incorporate the ‘mistakes’ or ‘missteps’ we may have taken, but they are part of the journey. Having mercy for ourselves, and faith in our process, is essential.
Our faith is constantly being tested, as James reminds us:
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2–4 ESV
